Scaling Up: How We Transformed Our Business with Website Template Design

If there's one thing we've learned on our business journey, it's that embracing a challenge (and change!) can lead to remarkable growth. That's why we're excited to share a pivotal moment with you: our decision to dive into the world of selling website templates.

Template design has always been on our radar as website designers, especially because a lot of our clients are template designers themselves. We very much always want to have a finger on the pulse of what our audience goes through, and how we can help within this niche.

Coupled with (obviously) wanting a piece of the passive income pie and creative freedom to design whatever our hearts desired - selling a website template seemed to be the next natural progression for our digital product business.

Creating a website template isn’t necessarily hard, but there are definitely a few steps to getting the knack of it – and we can say we were initially a little bit daunted by the whole thing! Luckily we’d found a course called Standout Squarespace a few years prior and trusted Rache the founder to help walk us through how it all worked.

Using the methods we learnt in the Standout Squarespace Course, we dove right in template creation. The Standout Course helped us with the confidence to finally make the dream a possibly and our first template as a hit: SQUARESHOPPE

And what started as a simple addition to our digital product business quickly became a game-changer, opening doors we never knew existed. So, grab your favorite beverage and join us as we explore how selling templates transformed our business, bringing us newfound freedom, scalability, and opportunities for passive income. Let's dive in!

01. Changing How We Work

Switching to selling templates was a big shift for us. It meant moving away from working on individual client projects and embracing a new way of doing business. This change not only gave us more income options but also set us up for a steadier business future.

  • Experimentation: Selling templates provided us with the flexibility to experiment with different design techniques and functionalities, leading to the creation of unique and cutting-edge templates.

  • Collaborations: This new knowledge about template has grown our community and allowed us to collaborate with other template designers and educators.

02. Finding More Freedom

Selling templates gave us more flexibility. No more tight deadlines or project limits – we had the freedom to run things our way. This freedom let us explore new ideas and find a better balance between work and life.

  • Passion Pursuits: We carved out time to pursue personal interests and hobbies, rejuvenating our creativity and motivation.

  • Giving Back: We dedicated some of our newfound freedom to volunteering and supporting causes we care about.

03. Growing Without Limits

Templates became the key to growing our business. By serving more customers at once, we sped up our growth and made our business more efficient. This growth meant we could reach more people and make a bigger impact with our work.

  • A Specialised Solution: Our website template addresses a specific pain point and challenge faced by our target audience, so we were able to provide a specialised solution that resonated with their needs.

  • Scaling Operations: We were able to invest in tools and systems to streamline our process and handle a higher volume of sales and inquiries.

04. Helping A Wider Community

Selling templates allowed us to reach more of our fellow website designers who were facing similar challenges. By offering solutions that could be easily adapted to different needs, we were able to support a larger group of designers within our niche community, helping them overcome common hurdles and achieve their goals more smoothly.

  • Connecting with More Designers: Our templates reached designers from all over the world, offering them practical tools to improve their online presence and grow their businesses.

  • Making a Difference: With our templates, we could assist more designers simultaneously, providing them with resources to create professional websites without the usual barriers.

05. Earning While We Sleep

One of the most appealing aspects of selling templates has been the opportunity to generate passive income. By creating valuable assets that continue to generate revenue over time, we've been able to enjoy financial stability and security, allowing us to focus on other aspects of our business and personal lives.

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing that we have a reliable source of income even when we're not actively working has given us peace of mind and reduced financial stress, allowing us to focus on what matters most to us.

  • Investing in Growth: We're able to use the extra income from template sales to invest back into our business. Whether it's upgrading our equipment, hiring help, or expanding our offerings, the extra sales allows us to grow and improve.

Our website template SQUARESHOPPE has been such a fun and impactful project to work on and it’s really all thanks to Standout Squarespace! Who gave us the confidence to create a template that not only looks beautiful but also is super functional. And when we launched SQUARESHOPPE, it felt like a real win, knowing we were offering something valuable to our fellow designers.

If you’re ready to level up your design game with templates, we highly recommend checking out Standout Squarespace. It’s not just a course—it’s a supportive community and a game-changer for your website design business.
